For years, I taught in several NJ elementary schools and had the privilege of educating many Kindergarten, Second Grade, and Fifth Grade students, as well as leading Basic Skills reading groups. Reading and writing have been my favorite activities since I was a little girl so I always made them a large part of every lesson I taught. Tutoring students for reading readiness and fluency was a natural transition from the classroom when I became a stay-at-home mom.
I found myself working with a lot of families who identified their children as struggling readers. The reading activities I had developed for my Basic Skills students in the public schools worked equally well in our tutoring sessions. Parents began to use my activities in their homes as reinforcement, and with their other children as well. Several encouraged me to write these activities down and that is how the Reading House began!
